On Friday 23rd August 2013 Listry community council, Listry comhaltas and Listry GAA hosted a welcome home for Deirdre Buckley the Boston Rose. Deirdre is the daughter of former Listry footballer Seamus Buckley. The event was held in the community centre and was a great occasion.

The evening started with the’ Boston Rose’ Deirdre and local ‘rose bud’ Jemma Walsh led into the comm. centre by Killorglin piper

Tommy McGuillicuddy. Deirdre was accompanied by her   parents Seamus

and Nancy and her brother Seamus. Once inside the hall Deirdre was met by the young girls of Listry who were beautifully dressed to meet the Rose.It was nice for the young girls to  meet Deirdre, get an autograph or a photo and thank you to Deirdre for giving the girls time and being so nice to all.

Ciara Kennedy from Listry comhaltas and her young dancers performed a beautiful Kerry set which was very much appreciated by the large audience.Later we had a young instrumental group and finally we had four young girls from Listry comhaltas perform the brush dance.

Thank you to all the young musicians and dancers from Listry and thank you to Ciara and all the parents for the time you all gave to preparing the kids.

Thank you to Tony Darmody and Listry community council for providing refreshments for all on the evening. The community council are experts  in catering and the specially made cake for the ‘rose’ was a beautiful gift. Thank you to all who helped in preparing and serving refreshments and thank you for cleaning up after.

Former Listry footballers and class mates of Seamus Buckley from Faha school swapped stories and laughing and smiling faces were heard and seen everywhere.Thank you to Tony O’Shea,Lissevane, for bringing some great old photos from Faha School and giving copies to Seamus to bring back to Boston.

A nice friendly athmosphere permeated both rooms in the community centre and the night could have lasted for days.Eventually a photo was arranged with Deirdre the ‘Boston rose’ and all the Buckley family. It was only when around forty members of the Buckley family assembled for the photo that we all realised what a great re-union and ‘gathering’ of the Buckley clan the night had become.

To finish off the evening Michael F O’Connor sang a great song called ‘The time that God sends’ and it was very appropriate and very emotional for all. Deirdre thanked everyone for the great welcome , it meant a lot to her and her family. Seamus also thanked everyone and said he would never forget the evening. Michael F finished with another great song, the’ Rose of Tralee ‘and we all joined him in a rousing performance of the Kerry anthem.

Deirdre Buckley and her family have returned to Boston and as we all return to our own interests,Listry Community Council, Listry Comhaltas and Listry GAA can all feel proud of having come together to honour one of our own. It was a great night that will live long in the memory of all  those that attended.

Up Boston! Up the Buckleys and Up Listry!
