Valentia started this game in much the better fashion even though they were playing into a very strong wind. Listry struggled with their game until a David Nolan goal after 9 minutes brought them into the game but this did not last long as John Shanahan crashed a close in free to the Listry net to put them back in front after 19 minutes, Valentia held this lead to half time where they led 1-3 to 1-2. The second half started better for Listry as they drew level from the throw in, Valentia however were in no mood to surrender and they went back into the lead with a great John Shanahan goal in the 33rd minute. Listry gradually took control of the game namely because of the mid field dominance of Paul Kennedy and Jimmy O Leary, and this eventually led to a Listry goal from Garry O Sullivan in the 49th minute which saw them take the lead that they were not to lose. A second goal from David Nolan, who gave a man of the match performance, which was Listry’s third saw them take this first round novice game on the score 3-5 to 2-5. Valentia certainly gave their div 3 opponents a hard game where the home side never reached the standard they have shown in the county league so far and can count themselves lucky to be in the next round against Knocknagoshel.
