On Sunday 14thApril 2013 Listry U-12s played Scartaglen in the second round of the county league in Scartaglen.Played in terrible conditions, wet, windy and a muddy field,it was going to be a difficult day for our boys and girls.
Listry welcomed back Micheal Keane,Micheal Buckley,Niamh Broderick, Mairead Lehane and the four players added greatly to the panel, with great performances.Listry played with the wind(gale) in the first half and dominated the play, but with Scart. packing the defence and an outstanding goalkeeper scores were hard to get. However,Listry put some good moves together and the scores started to flow.Killian Broderick got a goal,Aaron O’Shea got a point,Mairead took a good point,Seamus Giles scored a free and Killian tapped over a point and 3 frees.Ronan Buchanan and Ruairi Murphy worked very hard for the team and were unlucky not to get a few scores of their own.Mairead Lehane and Seamus Giles are a great mid-field pairing and made the Scart boys earn any ball they got.Aaron O’Shea was very strong on the ball and always getting into good attacking positions. Our defence of Micheal Buckley, Eoin O’Donnell,Ciara Tangney,Aileen O’Leary and Dylan Brennan didn’t have a lot to do in the first half, but, dealt with any danger when it arose and kept Scartaglen scoreless in the first half.Niamh Broderick came came into the defence in the final quarter of the first half and got involved in the action straight away with some solid defending. At half time the score was Listry 1-6 Scartaglen 0-0
So now just like the previous week in Lispole, Listry faced into a gale force wind and wondered would 9 points be enough of a lead.Listry started the second half brightly and the hard working Ruairi Murphy struck with a great goal.Scartaglen tried hard but Listry seemed to play much better when the forwards had more space and Ruairi scored another goal and a point.Listry coach Jeremy Wrenn and his selectors Mike Dwyer and Keith O’Donnell introduced all the subs in the second half and all played great football.Joseph Courtney showed his strength and scored a great goal.James O’Dowd proved what a versatile player he is coming in on the half-forward line after playing in goal last week.
Great to have Micheal Keane back in action and Micheal was as reliable as ever, defending well, attacking at the first opportunity and delivering good ball to the forwards.Jack O’Leary came in on the full- back line and played a great game, using his strong kick to reieve the pressure in the last quarter.Young Daire Murphy(u-9)playing his first game for the U-12s also played very well and very brave in general play.
So after a great team performance in the second half Listry scored 3-1 and Scartaglen 1-3.The final score was Listry 4-7 Scartaglen 1-3,Listry, just like last week scored 1 point more against the wind.
Missing on Sunday was another great player for Listry Aaron O’Donoghue.Hope to have Aaron back next week when we travel to Cordal.
